Schools here could lose 200 students

• There were 4,647 full time equivalent students enrolled in the district as of May 31. The district expects to lose 200 students in September.

• A reduction of $175,000 in the operation and maintenance means two custodial positions are being cut.

• The board of education gave approval in principal for Ballenas Secondary students to participate in the Encounters with Canada Program in Ottawa in September 2008 and March 2009 and for a student trip Costa Rica in the spring of 2009 and a trip to Italy and Greece in 2010.

• The board approved school growth plans, the district achievement contract and a seismic project agreement with Parksville Elementary School.
